Intro to Video Game Design Unit

Lesson Objectives:
1. Discuss the idea of video game design as an expressive art form after watching a video clip of a video game designer.
2. Identify how video games effectively engage players by teaching basic skills through level design, by creating a storyline or plot, and game environment design.
3. Evaluate two Kodu Game Lab games on a graphic organizer after playing them. Evaluation is based on how effectively the games teach basic game skills, how effectively the game environment is designed and how engaging the storyline of the game is.

Today's Lesson:
Good morning, class! For the next couple of days you'll be introduced to the world of video game design! We'll be watching a video clip about the game designer behind Super Meat Boy. We'll also be evaluating the classic video games "Megaman 3" as well as the game "Super Mario Bros" from the perspective of a game designer. Finally, you'll take this knowledge and evaluate two Kodu games in the same way. It should be fun and informative. Enjoy!

Step 2: Click on the link below and play the game for 5 minutes. Then evaluate the game with Mr. Vela.

I think what made one of the Kodu games more engaging more than the other is that one was simple and easy to follow and some were confusing and had too much of a big goal to set? Something that makes a game fun is that creativity and something simple to follow.

Something that makes kodu games fun is that you have to think. its more like mind bogling to just play it just makes you have to think about your next move.

The most important quality to game is to think would the people who is playing the game. So if you are going to make a good game the most important step is to keep revising.

One if the games from Kodu that was more engaging than the others is PAC MAN. PAC MAN is easy to learn and well known to be fun game to play.

1. I believe a story line engages the player into the game more, if they get connected they might get more engaged. Also if the player cares about the main character they might be more engaged.

2. First of all the amount of actions you have in a video game makes the game more fun, if you have a lot of actions the player has variety. The surrounding also makes the game more fun, if they have a unique map it will be more fun.

1: save the princess was an alright but the lag made it hard to control the character.

i think the kudu games were very laggy but my favorite was pac man because it was the most *non laggy* and what makes them engaing is that they are just video games and that is all i mean they are not bad but they are not good either.

but i think what makes a good video game is 3 things
characture building because you want to have youre own characture

Non laggyness, i say this because you dont want to play a game that is porely scripted or full of lag

and finally the story i think the story makes the game all better because they want to know the people or background story or stories.
